JTours Israel

In April 2013 I traveled extensively throughout the Mediterranean and spent a memorable 2 days in Israel, docking in Ashdod and Haifa. After doing some scouting online, our group decided on booking ahead with Joel Berman, owner of JTours, a custom-tailored, private tour company in the Holy Land. Let me just say- it was INCREDIBLE.

On the first day, April 9th, Joel picked up our group from the Ashdod pier in a comfortable SUV and spent the next 8 hours giving us a tour of Jerusalem and the surrounding area (including the Church and Garden of Gethsemane). The Tomb of King David was also a highlight- especially seeing the 2 different areas for men and women to pray. We stopped at a local, open-air market and ate the most delicious falafel pitas with red cabbage and a delicious, thin white sauce called “tachini” (sesame). Also seized the opportunity to buy a leather hassock for the equivalent of around $20. After lunch with drove to the Western Wailing Wall and went to a hill overlooking Bethlehem. By far the most shocking part of the day was the enormous arched wall built over the highway to prevent cars from getting shot from hostile Jordanians.

The second day Joel picked us up from Haifa and drove North, stopping at the Sea of Galilee, the city of Beit-Shean, the 25 layers of civilization at Megiddo, the Belvoir Crusader fort and the site of Jesus’ baptism on the Jordan River. By far the most incredible view was from the fort (above). It was also cool to get a detailed tour of the ruins, including where residents used to cook their meals and defend the fortress.

Joel lists a few of his favorite tours on his website (http://www.jtours.co.il/favoritetours.html), though he emphasizes his willingness to cater exactly to tour groups’ wishes. I think technically we did a variation of his “Jerusalem- City of Gold” tour on the first day and “7000 Years of History in One Day of Archeology” on the second.

Words of advice and caution:

  • Israel is an amazing place that honestly requires at least a week to cover entirely. Even though we spent 2 full days touring the country’s featured areas, it felt very rushed. If I could have done it differently I would have liked to visit a winery and another few bazaars, and try more local cuisine.
  • Joel’s tours are intensive, especially when arranged for a full 8 hours. Prepare for an onslaught of information and history- Joel is a very able tour guide and talks almost nonstop.
  • Driving in Israel is not like driving in the United States and Joel knows the ropes. Don’t be alarmed by the speeds or maneuvers he pulls while on the highways.
  • JTours aren’t cheap, but prices are fair when you take into account pier pickup, tour length, the comfortable ride, small group and knowledgable guide.
  • Joel takes you to safe, comfortable places for food- expect to pay extra for these luxuries. If you get the chance, definitely try a falafel pita and sample local teas.
  • Religious sites require modest clothing; wearing long pants and bringing a coverup for your shoulders is your best bet.

Overall, I had a great experience with Joel and JTours and would recommend him to anyone traveling to Israel for the first (or even second) time. If you have any questions about his service or sights, don’t hesitate to leave a comment below. Have a great trip!
