Read about my decision to get PRK here. Read about the operation here.
On February 8th, 2012 I went in for a LASIK consultation at the Duke vision center in Durham, NC. I met with 1 nurse and 2 doctors, all of whom I felt were very capable and took very good care of me. The nurse in particular did everything she could to take the most accurate tests and data that she could to best determine which procedure was best for me. I felt that she had my back from the get-go. The first doctor I saw worked for the military for over 10 years and was very organized and meticulous when it came to telling me what to expect with the procedure. I felt very secure with him too. Finally after and hour and a half of tests, the main surgeon came into the room and talked me through my options. Basically, I could opt for LASIK and go the traditional route with very little downtime and almost instant visual correction. Or I could do what he suggested (given my low refractive error) and get PRK. I was told straight up that PRK was more painful but had fewer associated risks down the road and enabled me to get touch up surgery if need be. Once the surgeon saw that I was ok with the pain, he strongly suggested that I go with PRK. I agreed.
Once all the tests were finished, I set up an appointment for the following Friday afternoon (Duke does corrective surgery on Tuesdays and Fridays). I left the clinic with huge dilated eyes and started counting down the days. Also another note: you cannot wear your contacts for at least a week before the date of your consultation. You cannot wear soft lenses again for 10 days before your surgery. So basically since January 30 I have been out of contacts. I would have never thought that would be the last time I would wear them!!!
