Avocado Seed

It’s the time of year for whopper Bermuda avocados and I’ve been planting up a storm on the windowsill in our kitchen. So far only two have rooted, with “Fred 1” being the furthest along in terms of length of root. The plant stem has just started to peak out from the top of the seed!

Fred 1 was set in water on January 14, 2013- making him just under 2 months old in these photos.

Avocados are so freakin’ strange!

Also, thanks to The Hungry Mouse for tips, timelines and all the info you need to grow avocados from seed. The short version is:

  1. Remove seed from avocado and clean well.
  2. Skewer with three toothpicks and suspend over a cup of water. Make sure to give each seed a name!
  3. Let seeds sit in a sunny windowsill.
  4. Replenish/refresh water every few days.
  5. Wait impatiently, it can take weeks for any sign of life!
